Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in the city were purchased under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
